We are happy to announce a two-person exhibition "2020 𝄆 Wardian case 𝄇" by Koichi Hashiguchi and Watanabe Shinjiro at GRIDIN.
Kouichi Hashiguchi is a flower artist who develops floral installations, mainly at clubs in Tokyo. In this exhibition, the venue itself will be one terrarium, and another ornamental terrarium will be created within it. He will grow these two terrariums with rainwater collected at a place near Harajuku. Setting viewers in the nested terrarium is a meta-approach to the White Cube and, eventually, to the venue's architecture itself. This work lets us rediscover the nature of unaware water circulating in the city.
Shinjiro Watanabe is a visual artist who has created works on the subject of the relationship between plants and humans. In his recent works, urban plants have been the motifs. He will present several works on the theme of transportation of the plants at this exhibition.Watanabe seeks to express the relationship between plants and us differently from the existing binary confrontation by overturning all values by providing mobility with plants in cities.

The title "2020 𝄆 Wardian case 𝄇" is lined with the year of the exhibition, "Wardian case," and the symbols representing repetitions. The Wardian case is a glass container for plant cultivation, invented around 1829 by the British doctor Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward. In England, at that time, it was difficult for plants to grow due to air pollution. However, Ward coincidentally discovered that the ferns in the glass bottle germinated and grew with a small amount of fertilizer, and this discovery resulted in the invention of this box. Also, when Ward published this invention, he had already suggested that plants would help the animals to survive inside the box. A few years later, he proved that the fish could reproduce without changing the water if they kept in a glass box with aquatic plants. The animal care equipment improved from this small greenhouse is the first Vivarium that is still popular today. More interestingly, the initial widespread of this Ward box caused by the transportation of plants. Shipping overseas at that time were long voyages, and it was challenging to bring rare alive flowers of the colony back home due to sea breeze and water shortage. However, this invention made it possible. In other words, the prototype of the modern terrarium was born by isolating plants from the outside world with materials such as glass plates to give them mobility. This invention democratized the appreciation of plants as an aristocratic hobby and caused a significant paradigm shift in the history of the relationship between plants and humans.

In this exhibition, the plants transported by Watanabe will be presented as living organisms in the terrarium of Hashiguchi. It is the reinvention and practice of "The Wardian case" in the present center of the city in 2020. This exhibition includes both a metaphorical and practical sense: a relational show as well as a vivarium in which two artists and their works coexist to help each other's survival on various layers.
